My take on the iPad

A lot of people are trashing the Apple iPad already. I think it’s a good first step, but the second revision will likely be a vast improvement. However, I expect the iPad to become a lot more useful in the next couple of months. The iPhone was a cool idea, but the thing that made the device was apps.

Developers, Developers, Developers

Developers will definitely be able to make use of that large screen to make all sorts of applications that you could never fully achieve on the smaller iPhone and iPod Touch.

Way back when I used to write for TheAppleBlog.com, I wrote an article hoping for a GarageBand-like app on the iPhone. Some commenters thought that was crazy. For you folks, there are music recording apps for the iPhone.

The iPad is just the beginning

The musical applications for the iPad could be intriguing especially if appropriate hardware is created around the dock connector. Accessory makers have a golden opportunity – who do you think will be the first to put together a folding keyboard for the non-MacBook or a real dock to make it a laptop or desktop? (Yes, I’m aware of the Apple offering of its keyboard-dock, but it’s surprisingly uninspired. I hope third parties can find a more elegant solution.)

Why I’m waiting

As much as I’m intrigued by the iPad, I can’t bring myself to buy a rev A Apple product after my experience with the first gen MacBook Pro. I’m looking forward to rev B.
